Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Vermillion, South Dakota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing, an expert in hair testing, provides testing facilities across all cities throughout the U.S. with the capability to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing arrangements.

In recent times, drug testing methods have more commonly involved hair follicle drug testing. Various employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair drug testing in place of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by companies with stringent anti-drug policies, judicial courts, and individuals under probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug tests is they detect drug consumption over an extended period, often up to 90 days, with results collected under supervision and being hard to falsify. However, for identifying recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers, providing a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. Collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, efficient inspection for drugs of abuse. Though Screening effectively eliminates most drug usage cases at minimal cost, any positive results must be verified to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

A sample showing presumptive positivity in Screening undergoes further hair extraction from the original specimen for further analysis. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration significantly lower than that of other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As required, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to scrutiny under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to be present in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual variances in hair growth may alter drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Generally called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
