Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Waubay, South Dakota. If you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we're experts in hair testing and have centers across all major cities nationwide to perform it. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair for most tests. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle analyses. Hair drug tests are often mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over regular urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation cases rely on them. A key advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation making cheating difficult. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an expansive timeline of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the prime quantity for both preliminary screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s framework. This process includes verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any surplus data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive result in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen be presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a much shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite arduous, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a chronology of drug use over time, rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as “hair follicle tests,” the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
