Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug examinations in Ashport, Tennessee. Our expertise in hair testing is backed by a nationwide network of testing centers capable of conducting these tests. Typically, hair samples from the crown measuring 1.5 to 2 inches—or body hair—are valid for testing drugs, alcohol, or other custom hair analysis options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular over the years, outpacing traditional urine tests among employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts. Its extended detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with an almost foolproof observation process, makes it a preferred choice, although urine tests still excel for drug consumption within five recent days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can provide about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively immune to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, an equal volume of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This stage involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers an overview of drug use over time, rather than merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
