Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Baneberry, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have nationwide centers ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, drug testing methods more frequently involve hair follicle testing. It is increasingly being utilized by employers, the courts, and substance abuse experts as a preferred alternative to traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers favor it. Hair follicle tests have the advantage of detecting substance use for up to 90 days and are extremely hard to tamper with, but for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When trimmed near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, collecting 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to gauge the specimen is recommended. When scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. The term "head hair" refers solely to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab-based processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with entering a sample into a lab's system. This entails checking that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening consists of a swift preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result in screening necessitates confirmation to be recognized in court. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other processes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis one of the toughest procedures to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a smaller detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It supplies a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
