Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Morristown, Tennessee. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our facilities are available in cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for substance testing. Many businesses, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, legal courts, and probation monitors frequently choose these tests due to their extended 90-day detection period, highly supervised collection process, and difficulty in tampering, although urine tests remain more effective for recent usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand during growth, hair offers an extended history of substance usage. Collected near the scalp, hair provides a detection timeframe of up to nearly three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands—similar to a #2 pencil's width—yields 100mg, the perfect sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for specimen weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing encompasses four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's initial handling in the lab's system. Tasks include confirmation of proper sample sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry if not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for negating drug use across most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening phase suggests a positive result, extra hair from the original sample is taken for Extraction. In this process, drugs are pulled from hair at a much lower concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), presenting why hair drug screening is a complex procedure to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, outlasting the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Delivers timeline data: It reveals patterns over time in drug consumption, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect current use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the testing evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and traditional urine testing in Morristown, TN, the former offers distinct advantages. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy and are proven more reliable. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
