Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Bean Station, Tennessee. Whether you're looking for a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair examination is supported by numerous testing facilities across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Over recent years, the methodology for drug screening has increasingly included hair follicle tests. A variety of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Such tests are particularly favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals under probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug use detection period, reaching up to 90 days, conducted through an observed procedure, making it highly resistant to fraud. However, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain unparalleled in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing a long-term record of drug and alcohol presence. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of approximately three months. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both testing and verification. For tests like EtG, additional assessments, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is encouraged. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal amount of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab process for generating a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was securely sealed and properly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial, rapid evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, positive screenings require confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a specimen register presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation, as needed. The entire sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category, as well as accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine methods, which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug testing is hard to cheat, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug use patterns over time, rather than solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing techniques, hair tests tend to be pricier.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
