Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Beech Bluff, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, we excel in hair assessments and have centers across the nation that offer these services. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is typically required. Hair tests can determine drug use, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific needs.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle assessments in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. Companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary cases often opt for these tests. The key advantage lies in the extended detection period, often reaching 90 days, requiring a supervised collection, making it nearly fraud-proof. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for both alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it denotes scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with initially processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any added data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

Should a sample test preliminarily positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before validation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Validation is assessed against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: It's very hard to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
