Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Bold Spring, Tennessee. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialized hair testing facilities are available in every city across the country. Generally, a requirement of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies are increasingly relying on hair follicle examination. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with no-drug policies, courts, and probationers favor hair tests. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, almost immune to tampering, though urine tests remain superior for recent consumption detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it provides a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug usage. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug consumption for up to roughly 90 days. This method is easy to collect, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirming. For tests such as EtG, extras, and/or those covering more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation are the core steps in laboratory drug test processing.

Accessioning handles the initial steps of processing a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and resolving any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening need secondary verification.

If the Screening stage indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples marked as presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is verified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Challenging to cheat: Evading a hair drug test is extremely tough, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the assessment concentrates on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is becoming increasingly popular in Bold Spring, TN, due to its superior reliability compared to urine tests. While traditional urine tests have been standard, hair tests excel in detecting long-term drug use. Employers find hair tests more foolproof, as they are harder to tamper with and provide clarity on an individual's drug history, enhancing workplace safety and integrity.

Extended Detection Window

Bold Spring, TN benefits from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which tracks drug use for up to 90 days. This method gives employers a detailed look at an individual's history, aiding in better-informed hiring decisions. The comprehensive review offered by hair tests ensures that employers have access to the most reliable information available.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
