In Sneedville, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We maintain a nationwide network of testing centers capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair follicle drug tests lies in their extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, and their accuracy, as cheating is nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of intoxicants by retaining biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for substances. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send for analysis.

Collecting a 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For additional EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is advised. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. The term body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into the lab system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing data not included in an electronic custody chain.

Screening refers to the preliminary assessment for substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-valid. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require further substantiation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower levels than other techniques (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive Screening results are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days retrospectively, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug usage, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color, along with individual growth variations, can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In contrast to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in Sneedville, TN, offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests detect recent usage, hair testing provides a broader view of an individual's drug habits. This enhanced detection capability supports zero-tolerance policies effectively.

Employers benefit from the robust analysis of hair testing, gaining insights into substance use that urine tests might miss. The comprehensive detection period makes it an indispensable tool for ensuring workplace safety.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Sneedville, TN, is its extended detection window. Capable of spotting drug use up to 90 days prior, it presents a clear picture of an individual's substance history. This offers employers deeper insights into an applicant's or employee’s behavior.

The prolonged detection period surpasses other testing methods, making it ideal for thorough evaluations. Businesses can make confident hiring and retention decisions based on comprehensive data, enhancing workforce reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
