Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Calhoun, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we're specialists in hair analysis, with testing centers located Nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown of your head or elsewhere on the body for most cases. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a staple in drug testing. Employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair tests over traditional urine screening. Zero-tolerance policy employers, probation officers, and courts use these tests primarily due to their longer drug use detection period—up to 90 days—found through an observed collection, which is significantly resistant to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for recent consumption occurring within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust instrument, hair testing effectively uncovers alcohol and drug usage. The hair, by capturing biomarkers within its strands as they grow, chronicles a long-term history of substance use. When hair is harvested close to the scalp, it offers a detection window of about three months for alcohol and drug use. The collection of hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

The optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size), yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG add-ons and/or tests with more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. To ensure accuracy, weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale is advised. If the scalp hair is missing, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a specimen initially enters a lab’s system. This step includes verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any left-out data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift initial evaluation for substances. While being a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug usage in most specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples presumed positive in Screening undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at far lesser concentrations than in other methodologies (like urine or saliva), contributing to hair drug screening’s complexity and challenge.

Confirmatory tests for positive screen results utilize GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples receive necessary washing. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting shorter detection spans seen with urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test proves challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical pattern provision: It tracks substance usage patterns over months, unlike tests that reflect only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color differences and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle inside the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
