Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Central, Tennessee. For those requiring a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field, with nationwide centers skilled in conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies that enforce strict no-drug-use policies, along with courts and probation offices, often opt for hair follicle tests. A significant advantage of these tests is their extended detection window for drug use—generally up to 90 days. The process is observed, making it almost immune to tampering, though urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting usage within a recent 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair provides an extended record of substance intake by incorporating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. Hair samples taken near the scalp can offer a detection timeline of roughly up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil), taken nearest the scalp, amounts to 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG and others extending beyond 10-panel screenings, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not present, an equivalent sample of body hair might be used. 'Head hair' refers exclusively to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary intake of a specimen into the lab's infrastructure. This step verifies correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information not covered by an e-chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial cursory examination for substances of abuse. Though cost-efficient, this step identifies drug presence in many samples. However, all positive screens must undergo confirmation prior to legal use. Samples with presumptive Screening positives necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

When Screening indicates presumptive positivity, further hair is extracted from the original batch and prepared for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair testing a complex analytical procedure.

Confirming any Screening positivity is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples requiring confirmation are cleansed as necessary before analysis. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire testing process adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocols and aligns with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • extended detection timeframe: Hair analyses can trace drug usage up to 90 days, offering a more extended window than urine tests.
  • resistance to tampering: Given the complexity of deception methods, hair test results are more reliable.
  • historical usage patterns: This test maps drug consumption over time, rather than pinpointing recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • not useful for recent detections: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair strands.
  • expense: Hair analysis costs tend to exceed those of other drug-testing techniques.
  • result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the amount of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these screenings analyze the strand itself, excluding the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
