Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Flintville, Tennessee. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. Your hair must reach 1.5 to 2 inches in length from the scalp or body in typical scenarios. Hair tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing purposes. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers often employ hair follicle testing. This method mainly benefits from a prolonged detection timeframe of drug use, lasting up to 90 days, with observed sample collection ensuring accuracy and integrity. However, urine remains best for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they develop. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can reveal a detection span of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional, or multi-panel tests over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, the same quantity of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" entails all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four pivotal steps in a lab's processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This includes ensuring the sample's seal and proper dispatch, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective methodology to eliminate drug use in most samples, a single positive result must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples considered presumptively positive in the Screening stage need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a specimen be tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and set aside for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with positive indications are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire testing procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to shorter periods in urine tests.
  • High test integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, making results more dependable.
  • Insight into usage patterns: Hair tests can reveal ongoing drug habits over a timeframe, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
