Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug screening in Garland, Tennessee. If you're seeking a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing facilities throughout the nation, including in your city. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body suffices. These tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other custom hair test options.

Over recent years, drug testing practices have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Many organizations, legal entities, and substance professionals require this method over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers often use hair follicle testing. These tests offer extended detection, up to 90 days, through direct collection, making tampering nearly impossible, whereas urine tests remain superior for recent usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair archives a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window spanning nearly 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG tests, add-ons, or for tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step entails verifying the sample’s seal and proper shipment, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid analysis for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to negate drug use in most specimens, a positive screen requires confirmation to stand in a legal setting. Any specimens that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection frame: Hair drug screenings can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that offer a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It is highly challenging to alter the outcome of a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Yields historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
