Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Gates, Tennessee. Whether you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing with locations across every city Nationwide ready to serve you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or from the body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to meet other testing needs.

Recently, the inclination towards using hair follicle drug tests has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over the usual urine test. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and people on probation. Hair follicle testing offers an extended window for drug detection, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine testing is still deemed more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair samples have become a crucial asset for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the strands of the emerging hair. When procured near the scalp, it can reveal up to a quarter-year detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is uncomplicated, quite resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to any other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The sequence of laboratory processing for a drug test involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary entering of a sample into the lab’s framework. This phase includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry that’s not available in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial brief examination for illicit drug presence. While Screening offers an economical approach to excluding drug consumption in most samples, a custodial-ready positive result mandates formal confirmation. Samples with presumptive positive findings in Screening necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample produce a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair in substantially lower concentrations than found in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring hair drug screening as the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the endorsement to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug assessments can trace drug consumption up to three months, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, bolstering result accuracy.
  • Gives past data: They offer a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing is pricier than alternative methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Frequently mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually analyzes the hair strand itself, not the under-the-scalp follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
