Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is available through Accredited Drug Testing in Holston Valley, Tennessee. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our facility is equipped for such tests, with centers nationwide. You'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Lately, there has been a shift towards using hair follicle drug tests for screening. More and more employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer these over traditional urine tests. Employers who enforce zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers commonly use hair tests. The key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected with direct oversight, making it tamper-proof. However, for drugs used within the last 5 days, urine tests are still the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair offers a long-lasting record of alcohol and substance use. When gathered near the scalp, it can yield a detection period of up to around 3 months for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure is composed of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Initially, Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into the laboratory's framework. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

The Screening step is a preliminary, swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although it is an economical technique to exclude drug intake for most samples, a positive screen necessitates validation to be permissible in court. Samples that are likely positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During this phase, the extraction of substances from hair occurs at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screen is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples identified as presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating hair drug tests is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Displays historical usage: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug test methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this testing assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outshines Urine Testing in Holston Valley, TN: The advantages of hair testing over urine tests are numerous. Hair tests offer a longer detection window and are nearly impossible to cheat, unlike urine tests. Superior detection accuracy makes hair testing the more reliable option for many organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
