Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Kingston Springs, Tennessee. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, we excel in hair testing and have locations across the country to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head, or body hair, are required. Hair tests can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other tailored testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in recent times. This method is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation programs utilize hair tests due to their longer detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and the observed collection process, which is difficult to circumvent. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing a long-term account of alcohol and drug use. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, add-ons, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" references scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test at the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial basic test for drug use. Although it's a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug consumption on most samples, a positive result needs verification to stand in court. Any samples deemed presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is taken from the original batch for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than other tests (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a complex procedure.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive Screening result. All presumptive positive specimens are washed prior to necessary confirmation. The entire lab sequence is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter window.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair tests are very hard to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: They show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests, particularly in Kingston Springs, TN. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair testing can reveal drug consumption over a much broader period, typically up to 90 days. This longer detection window offers a more comprehensive analysis of an individual's substance use history, providing greater certainty and depth of insight.

The reliability of hair testing surpasses urine testing, as it reduces the potential of inaccurate results due to manipulation or adulteration. With hair follicle tests, subjects have a harder time concealing substance use, making this method superior in ensuring accuracy and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

One of the strongest points of hair follicle drug testing in Kingston Springs, TN, is its extended detection window. This method can trace drug use for up to 90 days, providing employers and test administrators with a broader understanding of an individual's substance use history. This prolonged insight is crucial for comprehensive and informed evaluations.

By using hair testing, Kingston Springs employers gain access to extensive historical data, allowing for more precise assessments compared to other testing methods. This greater detection range is vital for making confident, well-informed decisions regarding workplace safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing is a significant advantage in Kingston Springs, TN. By substantially reducing the risk of sample adulteration, hair tests provide results that are both reliable and difficult to dispute. This integrity ensures that the results are trustworthy and credible, vital for enforcing drug-free policies effectively.

Hair follicle tests resist the common pitfalls of other testing methods by offering a method of collection that is difficult to manipulate. The observed collection process adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that samples remain untainted and reliable, supporting the credibility of every test.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
