Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings, available in Limestone, Tennessee. For those in need of drug or alcohol testing utilizing hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in this field and operates centers throughout the nation, where hair tests are conducted. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head hair or body hair can be used. Our hair tests offer options to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customizable testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug detection practices. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. Utilized by organizations with zero drug tolerance, courts, and individuals on probation, hair follicle tests offer a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, ensuring a reliable, tamper-resistant method. However, urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as an historical record of alcohol and drug usage by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those spanning more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. In instances where scalp hair is absent, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The method of assessing a drug test result in the lab involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, encompassing entering a sample into the laboratory's records. This process checks that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any other data entry not captured by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, testing positive necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening must undergo a confirmatory test.

In cases where a sample tests presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample in preparation for Extraction. During this process, drugs are derived from the hair at much more diluted concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from the screening phase is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation where needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection scope.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical pattern provision: It can demonstrate drug usage trends over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands superior to traditional urine tests in Limestone, TN by offering unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. This method can identify drug usage histories that might be missed by urine testing.

Compared to the limitations of urine tests, hair tests provide a more comprehensive substance use profile, making it the preferred choice for enforced compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
