Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bethesda, Tennessee. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with numerous testing facilities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a part of standard drug testing procedures. Organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, or individuals on probation due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, its supervised collection procedure, and its resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for drugs used in the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a significant means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair records an extended history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can unveil up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section with around 200 hairs (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the sample. If head hair isn't accessible, an equivalent measure of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes every other hair category (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This encompasses confirming if the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and finalizing any further data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid evaluation for drugs. Besides offering a cost-efficient technique to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a favorable screen must be confirmed to hold validity in court. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening indeed needs a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This step involves the extraction of drugs from hair in far lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any favorable screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when required. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Tough to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus yielding more precise results.
  • Presents historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be discoverable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth discrepancies in hair can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis concentrates on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out in Bethesda, TN, due to its superior detection capabilities compared to traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
