In Parsons, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in this type of analysis, with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for screening. Preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, this method is favored over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are utilized by those enforcing strict drug use policies due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, their observed collection process, and their resistance to tampering. For recent drug use detection (within the last 5 days), urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The process of hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This is because hair captures a history of alcohol and drug activity by securing biomarkers within its growing strands. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to three months. It's easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG and those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there is no scalp hair available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. Here, head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test across four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. It's a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug use in most cases. However, results indicating a positive screen need a confirmation to be admissible in legal scenarios. Presumptive positives during Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to undergo Extraction, during which substances are isolated from the hair at decreased concentration levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids). This makes hair drug testing a substantially challenging approach.

Confirmation follows a positive screening outcome through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed as positive undergo necessary washing before confirming. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited range.
  • Testing integrity: Hair drug tests present a considerable challenge in altering results, ensuring outcome accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: It can delineate a timeframe of drug consumption, beyond recent usage indications.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing techniques, hair tests generally incur higher costs.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly cited as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
