Located in Pope, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in this field is unmatched with testing centers nationwide trained to conduct such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required from the crown or body. This method can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for personalized testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular. Many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Businesses with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs often use hair follicle testing. A key advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days and its integrity during a directly observed sample collection process, making it extremely difficult to circumvent. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most effective for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By incorporating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers a comprehensive history of consumption over time. Hair samples taken near the scalp can indicate drug or alcohol use for up to three months. Moreover, hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and validation tests. For tests involving EtG or exceeding 10 panels, a specimen mass of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory drug testing procedures include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed within a lab’s framework. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening functions as a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. Although it is a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug ingestion in most samples, a positive screening requires verification for legal validity. Confirmatory testing is mandatory for any samples yielding presumptive positive results during Screening.

Should there be presumptive positives found in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for use in the Extraction phase. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), posing a challenge for hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of positive results from screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positives are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Low tampering risk: The difficulty in manipulating a hair test leads to more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical patterns: Hair testing can map a timeline of drug usage rather than just detecting recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Generally, hair tests incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
