Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Reagan, Tennessee. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist. Our nationwide facilities can conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, legal systems, and addiction counselors are favoring hair tests over traditional urine screenings. This method is chosen by zero-tolerance organizations, legal entities, and probation officers. The main advantage is a 90-day detection window, collected under supervision, and it is almost foolproof. However, urine is still preferred for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A hair sample of approximately 1.5 inches, containing around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg, the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation processes. When processing EtG, additional panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount from body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample within the laboratory's system. This stage involves confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means of excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally recognized. Any samples initially deemed positive during Screening need follow-up confirmation.

If Screening indicates a potential positive, further hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are pulled from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid testing), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirming any preliminary positive from screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positives undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is overseen under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage patterns: Hair testing reveals drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days following usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments examine the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
