In Slayden, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in this testing method, we have centers Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests for drugs or alcohol. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair testing can be customized for a variety of substances, offering a thorough analysis.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Many employers, the justice system, and substance abuse experts prefer this over urine tests. It is favored by zero-tolerance employers and used in legal requirements like probation. Its significant advantage is a 90-day detection window, securing an observed collection process that's hard to tamper with. For very recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still provide the best results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has garnered recognition as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and corroboration. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory's drug testing process encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data input not covered by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive indication warrants confirmation for admissibility in legal settings. Samples suspected as positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates potential positivity in the Screening phase, further hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples assumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It provides a comprehensive record of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Slayden, TN for several reasons. It offers superior detection accuracy, capable of identifying drug use over longer periods. This makes hair tests more reliable, reducing the likelihood of false negatives. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
