At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug testing in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a preferred method for drug testing. This approach is favored by many employers, the legal system, and substance abuse experts who mandate hair testing over the traditional urine test. It's employed by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. A major advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, performed in an observed setting, making it hard to tamper with. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Collecting hair close to the scalp can offer a detection period of about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of hair (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, totaling about 200 strands, provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair implies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves preparing a sample in the lab’s system initially. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing leftover data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial simple check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage from most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and is ready for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive Screening results. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days as opposed to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drug detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and growth rate can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
