Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Winchester, TN, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for reliable hair and alcohol testing. Should you require such a test, we have countless centers nationwide ready to serve you. The requirement is typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown, though body hair can also be used. Hair analyses may cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other particular needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent compared to other methods. Authorities and professionals dealing with substance abuse now favor hair over urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation systems often need these reliable tests. Notably, hair testing allows for longer detection—up to 90 days—while urine tests still excel at identifying usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. Harvested near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to manipulate, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (about the dimensions of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar volume of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in a laboratory's drug testing procedure include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most instances, a screen indicating positivity needs to be substantiated for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive from Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample screen positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial source and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening confirmation is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Testing integrity: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical information: It can show a trend of substance use over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs are detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair pigment and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Winchester, TN

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing include more accurate detection and reliability. Hair testing can identify substance use over a prolonged period, unlike the shorter window of urine tests. This extended window allows for more comprehensive results, making it difficult to circumvent. Hence, hair testing stands out for its thorough approach to substance detection.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
