In Witt, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Leveraging a national network of testing centers, we perform specialized hair drug and alcohol tests across all cities. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is sufficient for the test. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing has increased in recent years. Many workplaces, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists favor this method over traditional urine tests. For employers with strict drug-free policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation, hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring near-definitive results as they are hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more efficient for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair stores a prolonged record of substance exposure, by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate drug or alcohol use over a span of around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation tests. For EtG examinations, supplements, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system, which involves confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of concern. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive result mandates validation for legal acceptability. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, the drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples marked as presumptive positives are cleansed prior to any necessary confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine checks which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating hair drug tests is notably arduous, leading to more reliable results.
  • Chronological usage insight: It reveals a drug use pattern across time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become traceable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Witt, TN, hair follicle testing is becoming the preferred method for drug detection, easily surpassing the traditional urine tests. Hair testing offers superior accuracy and reliability, detecting substances over an extended period. It minimizes false negatives, providing employers and authorities with a clearer understanding of a person's drug use history.

A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. Whereas urine tests can only detect drug use within a few days, hair tests reflect drug use over several months, often up to 90 days. This comprehensive detection is invaluable for assessing substance abuse patterns in employees or applicants.

Extended Detection Window

A key benefit of hair follicle testing in Witt, TN is its prolonged detection capability. Unlike other methods, this test provides insight into substance use up to 90 days back. Employers benefit from this extended detection window, offering a thorough review of an individual's drug use history.
This capability is particularly advantageous for screening potential hires or monitoring existing employees.

By detecting drug use over months rather than days, employers gain a fuller perspective on an individual’s substance consumption patterns. This clarity supports more informed decisions in hiring or ongoing employee evaluations, ultimately promoting a healthier and more reliable workforce.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offered in Witt, TN are designed to significantly reduce the possibility of tampering. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are far less susceptible to adulteration, ensuring reliable and unquestionable results. This method is therefore ideal for maintaining the integrity of drug testing outcomes.

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests assures employers and legal entities of the test's reliability. As evasive techniques are largely ineffective against this method, it provides incontrovertible evidence of drug use, crucial for maintaining strict adherence to drug-free policies in the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
