Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Abell, Texas. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is needed, our special expertise in hair testing ensures that we can accommodate. Our testing centers, spread across all cities Nationwide, are ready to conduct hair tests. In most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is required. Different hair analysis options are available, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial entities, and probationers. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, which is collected through a monitored process, making it very tough to manipulate. However, for identifying drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collecting hair close to the scalp can offer nearly a three-month detection range for substances. It is easy to collect hair, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional requests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. By "head hair," we mean only scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory system. This step entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry if not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage allows for a swift preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although economical for excluding substance use in most samples, a positive result at this stage requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening mandate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting substances from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair testing one of the most intricate methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as needed. Every step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine screenings which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It showcases a timeline of substance use, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier than other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
