Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Aubrey, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialization in hair testing is complemented by our nationwide centers capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair can suffice for most tests. Hair analyses are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests instead of the usual urine test. Hair follicle tests are employed by entities with strict no-drug policies and for individuals on probation. The significant advantage of this test is its extended drug detection span of up to 90 days. The test is observed during collection, minimizing the chances of adultery, although urine tests excel at detecting recent five-day drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is renowned as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of substance use by embedding biomarkers in its strands during growth. When sampled near the scalp, it can provide up to nearly a 90-day detection range for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is absent, a matching amount of body hair is an alternative. “Head hair” specifically indicates scalp hair. “Body hair” denotes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary processes in lab evaluation of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's workflows. It ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes any extra data not covered by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening executes an initial cursory evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is budget-friendly for dismissing drug use in many instances, any positive findings require confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positives in Screening proceed to follow-up confirmation.

A presumptive positive during Screening mandates drawing further hair from the sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), signifying the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verified positive screenings undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive is cleaned before Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use back up to 3 months, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, lending more reliability to the outcomes.
  • Reveal usage patterns: It can chart a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Misses recent usage: Drugs generally appear in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair testing often costs more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
