In Blanket, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialization lies in hair analysis, with centers available nationwide. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required. Hair testing options include analysis for drugs and alcohol/ETG among other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for drug testing over traditional urine tests. Entities such as employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now often demand hair tests. These are ideal for organizations with strict drug policies and for probation cases. One of its main advantages is the extended detection window, typically spanning 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process, making it very challenging to tamper with. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now considered an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair can maintain a historical record of alcohol and substance use by fixing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When sampled close to the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg, which is an optimal quantity for screening and further testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis process for a drug test result entails four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for detecting drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use from the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Samples with positive indications in Screening mandate further confirmation.

If the Screening stage yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenges in falsifying results: It's very challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests," the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Blanket, TX, the superiority of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests is evident. Hair tests provide enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, capturing substance use history over a much broader timeline. While urine tests offer short-term insights, hair analysis offers a more extensive view, making it an ideal choice for thorough drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
