In Carlsbad, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair-based tests for drugs or alcohol, we have centers in every city nationwide ready to perform the procedure. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity over traditional methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer them to urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, legal bodies, and probation officers, the main advantage is its 90-day detection period, collected under observation and hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they develop. When harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence over a detection span of up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and facile to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, representing the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unattainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes the four key steps of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system is conducted. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and delivered, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid inspection for abused drugs. While it’s a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be legally valid. Any samples that yield a presumable positive in the Screening phase need confirmation via a secondary test.

If Screening indicates a presumable positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are pulled from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine testing, hair follicle tests in Carlsbad, TX, provide superior detection accuracy. Their reliability is unmatched, offering definitive evidence of substance use over an extended period. Unlike urine tests, which can be influenced by recent actions, hair tests present a more comprehensive history.

The nature of hair testing makes it difficult to manipulate. This ensures employers and legal authorities that the results they receive truly reflect an individual's substance use history, giving them the confidence to make informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Carlsbad, TX, stands out for its extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This long-term view offers employers an insightful look into an individual's substance history, unlike shorter-term methods like urine testing.

This extensive window is crucial for employers needing detailed substance use history, as it reflects sustained patterns rather than one-time consumption. Hair testing provides clarity and thoroughness unmatched by traditional testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Carlsbad, TX, hair follicle testing minimizes the risk of manipulation, offering robust and reliable results. Unlike urine tests, where adulteration is a known issue, hair tests maintain their integrity against tampering efforts.

This resilience ensures that the outcomes remain trustworthy, aiding employers and legal entities in relying on the test without fear of deceit. The method’s resistance to tampering significantly increases the credibility of the results obtained.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
