Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in El Sauz, Texas. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body can be used. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace in drug screening. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers often rely on these tests. Hair follicle drug testing offers a longer drug detection period of up to 90 days, involves an observed collection, and is challenging to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for drug use detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can present a detection span of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is effortless to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in a laboratory's drug testing process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial brief inspection for illicit drugs. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal proceedings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and groomed for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is cleaned before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: The test commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests" actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
