In Hasse, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, we have centers across all cities nationwide ready to conduct these assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method in drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are now favoring hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, probationers, and legal entities. The major advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the best option for identifying recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a crucial instrument in identifying drug and alcohol presence. Hair offers a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, less prone to adulteration, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's preferred to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the sample's initial processing into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample's sealing and correct shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples presumed positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is flagged positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening as a challenging method.

Any positive screening result is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed if needed. The process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments discover drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, rendering results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It sheds light on a drug usage pattern over distinct periods, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Price: Hair drug assessments usually bear a higher cost than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the technique analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
