Accredited Drug Testing in Los Alvarez, Texas offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If hair or alcohol tests are needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with nationwide centers available to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over standard urine screens. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers rely on these tests. A major advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, with monitored collection and minimal risk of tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, about 200 strands close to the scalp (similar in width to a #2 pencil), yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's sealed and shipped state, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positive samples in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo washing before Confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides an overview of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Los Alvarez, TX

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests, hair analysis provides superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
