Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Los Indios, Texas. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing provides expert hair testing with facilities in every city nationwide to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair collected from the crown of the head or body hair can be used, with tests able to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation, hair follicle tests offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, making them nearly impossible to tamper with during the observed collection process. However, urine tests remain the gold standard when testing for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When the sample is taken near the scalp, it can reflect a 3-month period of alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

For optimal analysis, a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) is ideal, yielding about 100mg. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advocate for weighing using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair lacks availability, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Our use of the term "head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types like facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into the lab system. This ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry ignored by an e-chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary quick scan for drug presence. Though cost-efficient for most samples, a positive in Screening demands confirmation to hold up legally. Any Screening presumptive positives require secondary validation.

Upon a Screening presumptive positive result, additional hair from the sample is used for the Extraction phase. In this part, drugs are removed from the hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing notably complex.

Validation of any positive results from Screening goes through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike shorter-duration urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely tough, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks consumption history: It delivers a record of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: It requires approximately 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
