Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Pomeroy, Texas. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and operate centers in every city nationwide to conduct hair tests. It's necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair at the crown or body, in most situations, for a hair sample. These tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a standard practice in drug testing over recent years. An increasing number of employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests instead of urine tests. Organizations that enforce zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary bodies often prefer this method. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended drug detection window, which spans up to 90 days, collected through a scrutinized process that's challenging to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most definitive.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair gives an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by containing biomarkers within its growth. When acquired near the scalp, it can supply roughly a 3-month period for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately matching a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the head will yield 100mg of hair, which is the prime quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, supplements, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be retrieved. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This process checks the sample's seal and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes extra data input that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that show positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration level than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

The Confirmation for a positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate conclusions.
  • Provides historical data: It shows a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair itself and not the follicle beneath the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
