In Purves, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis using hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, providing services through our nationwide network of centers, including hair testing options right in Purves. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for sampling. Our hair follicle tests can detect the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing over other methods has grown significantly in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists often select hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is integral for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies on drug use and is also popular with judicial systems and probation services. The standout benefit of this testing method is its extensive detection window, typically up to 90 days. Hair tests are administered under observed conditions and are difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent usage within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term history of substance use due to biomarkers being embedded within the hair shaft. When hair is collected near the scalp, it provides a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands, comparable in size to a #2 pencil, is sufficient for the ideal 100mg sample needed for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be used instead. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is introduced into the lab's system. This phase involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and properly sent, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any other necessary data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for the presence of substances. Though cost-effective, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Hence, any sample indicating a potential positive must undergo further Confirmation.

If the Screening phase suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the original batch for the Extraction stage. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug screening is the hardest to perform.

Any positively screened samples undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. If needed, samples are washed before confirmation as well. The lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Tampering with hair tests is highly challenging, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insights into patterns of substance use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair samples.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
