Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Randolph, Texas. Specializing in hair tests, with centers nationwide, we cater to those needing drug or alcohol analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient. Tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence in testing methods. Preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over urine tests, its advantages include a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, collected through an observed process and nearly cheat-proof. Yet, for recent drug usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

The evaluation of hair samples is now regarded as an effective technique for detecting alcohol and drug intake. Hair retains a prolonged record of drug and alcohol markers by embedding biomarkers within its strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can grant a detection horizon of up to around three months for substances like alcohol. Collecting hair specimens is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 hair strands—resembling the width of a #2 pencil—closest to the scalp yields about 100mg, deemed the optimal amount for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond ten panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair are specifically about scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory analysis of drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial process of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any manual data input not covered by a digital chain of custody method.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for illicit substances. It's a cost-effective method to exclude drug consumption in most cases, though any positive findings during Screening must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptively positive results during Screening warrant further confirmatory tests.

Should a sample yield positive results at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), marking hair drug analysis as a complex procedure.

The Confirmation of positive findings from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, all samples noted as presumptive positives undergo washing as needed. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire lab process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program as well as ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can detect substances for a period of up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Attempting to falsify a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Captures historical usage: It offers insight into patterns of drug consumption over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Results may vary: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Randolph, TX, choosing hair follicle testing over urine screens ensures heightened detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests unveil a better snapshot of long-term drug use with hard-to-tamper results. While urine tests detect recent usage, hair testing tracks substance exposure over 90 days, proving invaluable for employers aiming for comprehensive evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

In the realm of drug detection, hair follicle testing offers a significant edge in Randolph, TX. This method delves into a 90-day history, thereby granting employers a more thorough view of an individual's substance habits. With this extended detection window, hair testing stands as a formidable ally in understanding a user's prolonged drug exposure.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employers in Randolph, TX, can rely on the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing. Unlike other methods susceptible to manipulation, hair samples are exceedingly challenging to adulterate. This ensures reliable results, thereby maintaining the integrity of the testing process and delivering unquestionable outcomes to all stakeholders.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
