Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Salineno, Texas. Whether it's for drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in hair testing and have centers in every city across the nation. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair examinations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for unique requests.

Recently, hair follicle tests have been increasingly utilized in drug assessments. Many firms, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Companies enforcing strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation prefer these tests. Their advantage is an extended detection span of nearly 90 days, having a supervised collection process, making evasion nearly impossible. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers, hair offers an extensive historical account of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over an approximate three-month period. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the perfect sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We advocate weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial, axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis for drug testing involves four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a sample within a lab's framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires validation to hold up in a legal setting. Any samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing process as needed before confirmation. The full laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is significantly challenging to manipulate the outcomes of a hair drug test, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It offers insight into a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
