Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Savannah, Texas. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct your hair examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair is necessary for the test. Hair analysis is suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

In recent times, drug screenings have shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over urine ones. Organizations with zero-tolerance, judicial systems, and probation services prefer them. The primary advantage is a prolonged detection window, typically up to 90 days, gathered in an observable process and difficult to tamper with. For recent 5-day use, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This process involves checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is extremely difficult to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely current use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Savannah, TX, hair follicle testing is a superior alternative to traditional urine tests. With an extended detection period, hair tests can uncover substance use up to three months prior, providing a comprehensive assessment. Comparatively, urine tests often miss recent or sporadic drug consumption.

Hair testing's accuracy and reliability surpass that of standard urine tests. In workplaces demanding precision, hair analysis stands out due to its low likelihood of false positives or negatives, ensuring unbiased and reliable outcomes for policy enforcement.

Extended Detection Window

In Savannah, TX, hair follicle tests offer a notable benefit: an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This feature enables employers to gain a more thorough understanding of an individual’s substance history compared to other testing methods.

By encompassing a broader time frame, hair testing provides a comprehensive view of potential substance use, proving invaluable for employers who require detailed insight into an employee’s or applicant’s drug use over time, supporting informed hiring or retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in Savannah, TX significantly minimizes the risk of tampering. By utilizing a sample collection process that is difficult to alter, this testing provides trustworthy and definitive results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
