In Seven Oaks, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, we offer locations in cities across the nation for conducting such tests. You generally need around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair can also be tested. Our options include analyses for drugs, ETG/alcohol, and custom hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent recently. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, such as employers, legal authorities, and probation officers. A key advantage is its extended detection timeframe—up to 90 days—making it nearly impossible to manipulate. In contrast, urine tests remain more effective for identifying drug use within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term record of substances within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance usage for up to a 3-month duration. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for an accurate measure of the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial steps of entering a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring that the sample remains sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry necessary outside an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a primary short check for illicit drug use. Although Screening provides an economic means of dismissing drug usage for most samples, a positive indication from screening requires validation to be legally acceptable. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening demand a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations considerably lower than other methods like urine or oral fluid, which contributes to hair analysis being the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as requirements dictate. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for a duration up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which present a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies historical usage information: It can illustrate a pattern of substance consumption over time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify immediate use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs in contrast to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair coloration and individual growth characteristics can influence the concentration of drug byproducts within hair strands.

Note: Often described as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
