Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Alta, Utah. Should you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair samples, our focus lies in this area, supported by a network of testing centers nationwide capable of executing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be sufficient. These tests can be conducted to identify drugs, alcohol like ETG, or through other customizable options for hair analysis.

Over recent years, drug testing evolution has often favored hair follicle analysis. Increasingly, employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for these tests over traditional urine tests. Employers adopting zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers are primary users. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, under close supervision, making it almost impossible to tamper with. For recent drug use, particularly within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It can provide a detailed record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for identifying both alcohol and drug use. The collection process is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising about 200 strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG assessments, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages of laboratory drug testing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This phase confirms that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive is essential for legal admissibility. Samples with a preliminary positive require further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage isolates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), presenting a unique challenge in hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed for confirmation of any positive screening outcome. Before confirmation, samples identified as presumptive positives are washed when necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeline for detection.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are more challenging to tamper with, leading to more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a pattern of substance usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediacy: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over the traditional urine test in Alta, UT? Simply put, hair testing surpasses in both detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair examinations reveal a longer history of substance use, allowing employers a more comprehensive perspective, thus securing a more drug-free workplace environment effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
