What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by ensnaring biomarkers in the emerging hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be procured. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages involved in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes verifying that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to circumvent: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over a period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Burmester, UT, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine testing in significant ways. Hair tests offer superior detection over longer periods, making them more reliable for evaluating an individual's drug use history.
While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a more comprehensive detection window, revealing patterns of use that go unnoticed in urine testing. Additionally, hair tests reduce the potential for sample tampering.

Extended Detection Window

In Burmester, UT, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing sets it apart. Unlike shorter-term tests, hair testing covers up to 90 days of drug use history.
This broad coverage allows employers to make informed decisions, understanding patterns over months rather than days. By providing such a detailed view, employers gain a significant advantage in assessing the suitability of potential hires.
