Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Magna, Utah. If you are seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers located in cities across the nation capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent years, the adoption of hair follicle drug tests has been on the rise. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly mandating hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is preferred by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation officers due to its longer detection window for drug usage, typically up to 90 days, its monitored collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of drugs and alcohol by securing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. Obtained near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 90-day detection duration for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is easy, tricky to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for testing and verification. For assessments like EtG, additional tests, and/or those over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. If head hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main four phases in a lab's processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial treatment of a sample into the laboratory's database. This process confirms that the sample was securely sealed and correctly delivered, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any further data input not supplied by an electronic custody chain is completed.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While efficient in cost for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If there's a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, the drug extracts from hair at significantly lower concentrations than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab process is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certified to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • An extended detection span: Hair drug assessments identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheating difficulty: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: It indicates a drug usage trend over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis addresses the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine testing in Magna, UT, hair tests truly stand out. Hair follicle testing boasts superior detection accuracy, capturing a broader spectrum of drug use history than urine tests. Urine tests often cover only recent consumption, missing long-term patterns.

This distinct advantage makes hair testing not only more reliable but preferred by entities enforcing strict no-drug policies. Its comprehensive approach provides a more complete snapshot of an individual's relationship with substance use.

Extended Detection Window

One of the greatest advantages of hair follicle testing in Magna, UT, is its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, it can identify drug use for up to 90 days. This long-term detection capability offers employers crucial insights into an applicant or employee's substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
