In Centerville, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether your need is for a drug or alcohol assessment, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by a network of testing locations across the country. It is typically required that you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or body, for the test. Hair analysis can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug detection. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for this method in lieu of traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation services often rely on hair tests, which offer a longer detection timeframe of up to 90 days. Although very effective, the urine test remains the top choice for identifying substances used within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of various substances by embedding biomarkers within the hairs' fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, amounts to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For tests like EtG, extended panels, or over 10 drug panels, it's best to use 150mg of hair. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, similar quantities of body hair can be used. Scalp hair specifically refers to head hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating the sample into the lab system. It includes ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing information not included in an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers an initial analysis for the presence of drugs. Although it's a cost-efficient strategy to rule out drugs in most tests, any positive finds must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test positive in Screening require further Confirmation.

If the Screening stage suggests positivity, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive findings from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, complies with CAP standards (College of American Pathologists) for Hair testing and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can detect drugs up to 90 days, whereas urine testing has a shorter period of detection.
  • Low potential for falsification: It's highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers usage trends: It can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand, not the subcutaneous hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
