In Emigration, Utah, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. We cater to your drug or alcohol testing needs with nationwide centers, including specialized hair tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for testing. Screening options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom tests.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for many due to its long detection window and accuracy. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose it over urine tests. It's an ideal choice for zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation checks. The test's 90-day detection period and observation process make it highly reliable, though urine tests still best detect recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. A strand of hair records a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within its growing fibers. If gathered near the scalp, it offers nearly a 90-day detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional items, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing is recommended. When scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial handling of a specimen into the lab's system. This step checks if the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data input absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening carries out a primary swift assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening is a budget-friendly means to dismiss drug usage in most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary Confirmation.

In case of a presumptive positive in Screening, extra hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are then isolated from hair at remarkably low levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive result in Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before Confirmation if needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination per both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair scope and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments ascertain drug use for up to three months, unlike urine tests with briefer detection spans.
  • Hard to counterfeit: It’s quite difficult to fake a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insights: It can provide information on drug use patterns over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth disparities among individuals can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment reviews the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
