Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Murray, Utah. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol exam, our specialization in hair testing includes a network of testing facilities across all U.S. cities. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is needed. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and several other personalized testing methods.

In recent times, the inclination towards drug testing has increasingly favored the hair follicle method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often recommend hair drug testing over conventional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers strict on drug usage, the judiciary, and probationers. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its extended drug detection timeline of up to 90 days and the difficulty in falsifying results. However, for screening drug use in the prior five days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of the growing hair strand contain biomarkers, capturing a prolonged history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. “Head hair” specifically refers to the hair on the scalp. “Body hair” pertains to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although useful for excluding drug usage on most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that show presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive at the Screening stage, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug analysis is among the most challenging to conduct.

The Confirmation stage of any positive screening result employs techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples indicating presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It provides an overview of drug use trends over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot assess recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Attributes like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", these assessments examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
