Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Grantsville, Utah. Should you require a hair-derived drug or alcohol examination, our specialty is hair analysis, with facilities spanning every city nationwide. A sufficient hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally required. Hair analyses can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the preferred method for substance screening. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over typical urine analyses due to their robust detection capabilities. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation departments favor hair follicle tests for their extended drug detection window of up to 90 days and the challenge they present to any fraudulent attempts. However, for identifying drug consumption within the past five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an influential means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical overview of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional features, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest employing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps involved in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. All samples indicating a positive in Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than when using alternative methodologies (i.e., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is considered the most intricate methodology to execute.

Validation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed “hair follicle tests,” the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
