Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Hideout, Utah. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in hair sampling, with facilities in every city across the nation prepared to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the head or body. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific options.

Recently, there has been an increase in hair follicle drug testing as a standard procedure. Many companies, legal entities, and addiction specialists prefer hair testing over traditional urine sampling. Hair follicle tests appeal to workplaces with zero-tolerance policies and to judicial bodies, including those handling probation cases. Their main advantage lies in the extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, combined with an observed collection process that makes tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most dependable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. Captured near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional options, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair might be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily includes four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into the lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody format.

Screening presents an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than via other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It provides a timeline of drug use, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes approximately 5-7 days before drugs appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing formats.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations can vary based on hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
