Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kamas, Utah. If a hair or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analysis and operates testing centers across all cities nationwide to conduct hair assessments. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is used. Hair evaluations for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options are available.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle examinations. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair analysis over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation use hair tests. Hair follicle evaluations offer a longer detection period of drug use, up to 90 days, with observed collection, making them nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying substance use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands encapsulate a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within their growing fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transmit.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For additional tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We advocate for weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary procedures in processing a laboratory drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into the laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting extra data input not included in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening encompasses an initial fast assessment for substance abuse. Although screening is an economical approach to largely exclude drug use, a positive outcome requires validation to be legally viable in court. Any samples deemed tentatively positive during Screening must undergo a confirmatory follow-up.

If a sample is indicated as positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluids, presenting hair drug analysis as the most complex to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo necessary cleansing before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in conjunction with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug analysis captures drug presence over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Due to the complexity of biasing a hair drug test, results are more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insight into an extended timeline of drug usage patterns rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A span of 5-7 days is necessary for drug traces to surface in hair strands.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug analysis methods.
  • Variations in results: Influences such as individual hair color and growth rate discrepancies can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
