Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Carmel, Utah. If you're seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers in every city nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of your head or body is sufficient for analysis, which can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

The prevalence of using hair follicle tests for drug testing has surged in recent times. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation due to their extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair can offer a detailed history of alcohol and other drugs thanks to biomarkers embedded within the hair strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of roughly three months. It can be easily collected, not easily tampered with, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal quantity for both analysis and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional requests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other forms (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining drug testing results includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of the sample within the laboratory’s system, which includes ensuring it was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not provided by a digital chain of custody method.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for drug presence. It is a practical way to eliminate drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening demand further validation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted and prepared for the Extraction stage. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entirety of the laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which detect up to shorter periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, thus providing more precise results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It illustrates drug use trends over a duration, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Does not show recent usage: A period of approximately 5-7 days is needed for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically incur more costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this testing method actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
