Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Oak City, Utah. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with testing facilities located in every city across the U.S. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Hair assessments can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

In recent trends, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle evaluations. Many companies, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair-based assessments over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve firms with strict drug usage policies, courts, and parole individuals. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in the lab analysis of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing step where a sample is entered into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective means to rule out drug use in most cases, any positive findings need verification to be valid in court. Samples that produce a presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

In instances where a sample has a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a usage pattern over a timeline, beyond just recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
